An Introduction to the Gift of Tongues

This blog is dedicated to an exposition of the Gift of Tongues in the writings of St. Paul and how those writings have been interpreted up to our modern times. We will look at the controversy of how this extraordinary gift has been interpreted by many.

First, many Christian charismatic groups have an interpretation of the Gift of Tongues that begs many questions, and so it becomes important for us to understand this gift more closely and with more theological precision. Here is a link that highlights some controversial interpretations.

Then, we can take a look at a general Catholic perspective on grace, and the divisions of grace. Here we can look at the great doctors of the Church, their commentators, as well as the official teaching of the Church found in the Catechism.

A further distinction can be made in our understanding of the "Gift of Tongues," as found in the scriptures, namely, the difference between uninterpretable sounds and intelligible languages.

Finally, we can take a close look at a refined theological interpretation of St. Paul's writings on this gift. The most theologically rich commentaries naturally come from the Church Fathers and St. Thomas Aquinas.
